Fantastic interview. I'll definitely be reading Roadkill. What Amil said about literary readers wanting to be writers really struck a chord. Fascinating author
A really insightful interview,Amil's description respecting the balance between author intent and reader experience is very 'Big Magic'. Is Tilly's review/short story a hint for the competition??🤔
I loved when Amil said that people who say they enjoy getting negative feedback are lying! I got a professional edit of my MS recently and found reading through all the comments and suggestions quite overwhelming and depressing at first. But the editor reminded me that I was paying him to comment on how the MS could be improved after all, so that’s what he was focusing on. He also said once I started working on the edits I would be energised and it was true. I worked hard every day for weeks on the redraft think the novel is definitely stronger now.
YES me too... thanks for conceding. I would like to think I'm ready to take on someone else's experience of my writing but then the reality of it is so damn othering and depressing as you say... as an editor myself it's quite "funny" when an author defends something in the face of my reaction to it... funny because it feels like they're trying to deny how I took it-- which as a feeling reader is almost inarguable like whattt are you gaslightin my reading experience or..?😂 but then it comes back to, ok, so this is what you're trying to do and you feel really passionate about it so cllllearly this is what you need to do. But now you have to put in more work to make it happen that way for me too. It's also soooooo important as a reader/editor to highlight what you DO love about someone's writing like LOVE THIS DO NOT CHANGE A WORD IT'S PERFECT. Congratulations on putting someone informed's experience of your work above your... (would ego be the right word?) Tilly x
I'm looking forward to reading Amil's stories. I get a sense of Ursula K. LeGuin in the way Amil's work is described and am a huge fan of LeGuin, especially how she crossed sci-fi and literary. I also like what Amil said about the difference between the readers of both of those genres. I hadn't thought of it before but the literary crowd tends to be more writers-based. I'm interested to see how Amil navigates this.
I particularly like the mention of "codes" and how genre readers look out for these. My own novel (A Line of Code) is also all about that :)
Finally, as I mentioned before, I work at https://www.wattpad.com/. Our parent company, Webtoon, is based out of South Korea and I've been meaning to check out more literature from there
I haven't read anything by Amil yet... but i'm excited to. I love and appreciate all her "i don't know's..." I love the honesty of the I don't know...
My first three letters are the same as Amil's so i guess we share 75% of the same personality DNA? Hey Amil. The biggest difference I note here is that there are some authors I can't read if i'm trying to write (or just make it feel easier...) certain mammoths who give me serios stage fright... but I guess that's just ego. And self-assuredness. One day, like Amil, I'm sure it won't affect me so much.
From personal experience now big love to the experience of talking over food with Edwina 💘

hahaha... yes exactly. keenly spied Sinead. If reacting to other people's work can become creative... everyone's happy?

any employee benefits to get trendy on wattpad?🤭
I wish! ( in both cases 😭)
we support clients that publish their works on your competitor, lol... webnovel🤫
No worries. They are free to publish on any platform :)
just joking:D Better take this discussion of online publishing platforms to DM. Have a nice day and great pleasure to get connected.
Absolutely!
Epic. Glad you commented, it's reminded me of our untethered correspondence... will see to that now.
Thanks, Tilly
