Superb post! It's tough for creatives to grasp that publishing is a business but gaining an understanding of how it works is half the battle. If you can see the holes in the road you've a better chance of avoiding them!

Glad to see you engaging. I almost mentioned Rowling by name but felt I was only going to add yet another reference.

It is very hard to break into publishing successfully and generate a decent income. I'm hoping I'll provide some useful hints here on how to improve the odds in favour of the Writer.

J.K. Rowling is often quoted as 'the one that got away.' But it hasn't bankrupted those who didn't see the potential. It hasn't stopped the press at their door of new writers wanting to be published. The publishers will win. They will put their money and time to projects they think will be earners. I am shocked, still, at how many books are flooding the market. It is mean streets for us wannabees and always will be.
